Overused SFX Library

Overused SFX Library

Postby Editor » Wed Jun 09, 2010 8:17 am

Over the years, we've collected several questions submitted by our readers as possible Q It Up questions that were not used. We will be using the RAPforum to post many of these questions, and this is the first one. It came from Jason Parker at Withers Broadcasting.

"...how would/do you handle having a very overused sound efx library when the number crunchers won't allow for new stuff in the budget? We do tend to make some of our own effects when there is time, but you can't always get outside to record that perfect sfx you need."

Good question. If you don't have the funds, and are short on time to create your own effects, are there any sources you know of for free SFX?

Virtually all the major sound effects libraries now have websites where you can download individual sounds for a nominal charge rather than purchase an entire library. Much better for budget conscious projects.

Sound Dogs.com is the first library of it's kind that is entirely posted on the web and allows for individual downloads... for stereo or mono sounds the charge is by the second or length of the sound.

Personal promotional disclosure: Sound Dogs is the site where I sell my own library - Quantum Audio Mechanics. However I'd recommend them regardless of that... and I purchase sounds from them too.

Free libraries are out there but there's a reason why they're free - crappy quality.

Payback time...dude be considerate as well..it is easier to make your specific sound effect and then go about your business...I say offer your sound effects if they are original to others...as you may know...whether independent or huge radio outlets may have websites upoload your creations for your boys and girls in Prod!It may be beneficial for you n the end..you need friends..
